About the Author

Barney Groves has been a weightlifter for more than four decades and a weight-training instructor at the university level for almost as long. As a certified strength and conditioning specialist, he has also been a strength coach and consultant for several college teams. He is the coauthor of two other weight-training books from Human Kinetics—the top-selling Weight Training: Steps to Success and its companion, Weight Training Instruction: Steps to Success.

Groves began powerlifting in 1991 at the age of 55, and since that time, he has set state, regional, and National records in the squat. He has competed in two to four meets each year, placing first in every meet but one. Currently, he is the Virginia state and regional champion for the 60 and older age group.

Groves holds a PhD in physical education from Florida State University and is a professor of physical education at Virginia Commonwealth University. When he’s not lifting, Groves enjoys flying and working on his 113-acre farm.

Hi Kathy,

The book "Power Lifting" by Barney Groves, PhD. Well guess what parts I've read and re-read? Yep all the ones with you.  Yeah, it's a great book but I want to read and get advice from an experienced not to mention world champion female powerlifter.

Kent Johnson currently holds six drug free national records in the 220 lb. weight class. At this weight, Kent competed in the Lifetime and Pure categories, setting records in both. His best squat in the 220 lb. category is 788 lbs. His best bench is 460 lbs. His best deadlift in the 220 lb. category is 777 lbs. His best total is 1956 lbs. In the 198 lb. category his record is a 722 lb. deadlift. 
Dave Weiss competes in the 132 lb. class and has awesome lifts recorded. Dave holds USA Powerlifting Virginia state records, his records are: squat, 430 lbs., bench, 310 lbs., deadlift, 540 lbs., for a total of 1280 lbs.
Kathy Roberts has several World, America, Regional, and State records in four different weight classes. Her biggest squat is 380 lbs., bench is 270 lbs., and deadlift 450 lbs., all LIFETIME DRUG FREE.
Rich Coppin recently competed in the USAPL meet in Charlottesville and his lifts  were 470 lb. squat, 310 lb. bench, and 570 lb. deadlift. When I receive further details, I will list his biggest lifts in each event.
Barbara Beasely drug free female masters lifter.  Barbara holds several world records in the masters (40-44) squat 185 lbs., bench 120 lbs., deadlift 300 lbs.  and her total is 600 lbs., all USA Powerilfting Virginia state records.
Gigi Leader drug free female masters lifter.  Gigi holds several records and is an impressive masters lifter (50-54). Gigi holds USA Powerlifting Virginia state records in this age category, she squats 255 lbs., benches 170 lbs., deadlifts 280 lbs. for a total of 705 lbs. 
Barney Groves, PhD phenomenal masters champion (60-64). Barney weighs in at 194 lbs. and is 63 years old. His personal bests are 505 lb. squat, 260 lb. bench and 475 lb. deadlift. Author of the book.
