Angela Haynes started playing with tennis balls at age 3 and began tournament play at 7 years of age. She was ranked No. 1 in Southern California's Under 10 division when she was eight, but she didn't realize that she wanted to be a pro tennis player until she turned 13. She won the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, defeating Rita Grande in 2003. Her career-best tour and Grand Slam results were in 2004 at the US Open where she upset No. 22 seed Magdalena Maleeva en route to the third round. Her grandparents, Joe and Lucy Haynes, came out of retirement for five years and did custodial work at the FBI Building in Westwood, Calif., to help support her tennis career. Joe Haynes was a Negro League ballplayer, but the pain of being excluded from the major leagues made baseball all but a forbidden game and subject in the household, said Fred Haynes. Haynes' father, a former baseball player in the San Francisco Giants organization, is also her coach. |

KATHY ROBERTS in her early Tennis days!

This is a picture of me during my long distance running
and tennis playing days.
Running and weight training are two completely different physical activities.
It took a lot of hard work, dedication, and discipline to succeed at both.
A change of diet and a heavier and more vigorous training routine, and cutting
back a lot on cardio respiratory endurance exercises enabled me to put
on mass throughout the years.
I am a self taught tennis player. Through natural talent, I was able to earn the number two seed during my 1st year of college. My team won the college State championships that year. During my second year, I moved into the number one seed. I played with the USTA as well.
